Infectious diseases: when can my child go back to school?
Children who have caught certain infectious diseases need to stay away from school until they have completely recovered. This is not only because they need time and lots of rest in order to fully recuperate from their illness. Because infectious diseases are spread by contact with others who are affected, there are regulations about when children can go back to school after contracting these diseases. This is to prevent epidemics of these illnesses happening. Exclusion of sick children (and staff) from child care and schools is one of the most important ways to prevent the spread of infectious disease.

Sun Smart
Children are expected to wear a school hat and use sun screen lotion during the first and fourth terms when the sun is hottest. Children must wear hats during sport sessions in these two terms. Teachers will enforce a “No Hat? – Sit in the Shade” policy.

Anaphylaxis and Allergies – No shared food. Please assist us!
If a child is at risk, due to the likelihood of an allergic reaction, a management plan is lodged with the school and the appropriate medication provided by parents. The school has its role to play.
In line with recent upgrades to policy, you will notice that we have information regarding anaphylaxis and allergies posted outside each room. Students at risk have plans prominently displayed in the sick bay and relevant locations around the school such as the kitchen and Out of School Hours Care. The school has also run whole–staff Level 2 First Aid this year so we have a high level of knowledge regarding risk and treatment. I commend the staff for their willingness to participate in this intensive, out-of-hours training. We have also updated our policy and backed it up with the purchase of additional Epipens and Asthma medications to ensure the safety of children at risk. No sharing of food is critical and this is the approach recommended by the Royal Children’s Hospital.

At Montmorency Primary School the safety and well-being of all our students is paramount. This includes keeping children with allergies safe. To do this, we have a school rule of not sharing food. We also place signs outside each classroom where there are children with allergies. Please check with the classroom teacher before bringing food for special occasions to school.
