What's cooking in 2014?![]()
I have been hard at work topping up the beds with fresh compost, and Suzie was kind enough to help with this. I have also planted seeds in the garden and in the greenhouse so that we can get started as soon as possible. There is still plenty for us to do, so I will need your help!
It will be great to get everybody involved again in your fabulous Kitchen Garden. I am excited and I hope you all are too! I look forward to meeting all of my new students. Kitchen News March 2014
It’s all happening in the kitchen! Almost everybody has had a chance to make and roll out fresh egg pasta with eggs from our chickens. We have made lots of different types of pasta – linguini, angel hair and even bow ties! Blake from Grade 5/6 also made a record breaking 1.73 metre long strip of fresh pasta! Mick, one of our incredible volunteers, brought in a measuring tape to ensure accuracy – thanks Mick! Another big thank you to teacher, Sandie Symes for the donation of a few massive zucchini’s which then were turned into pasta sauce, zucchini ribbons and zucchini fritters and for the anonymous donation of a bag of lemons that became lemon ricotta fritters and some super silky smooth lemon curd (nice work Xander!). Don’t forget you are encouraged to bring an apron on your cooking day to protect your school uniform. Volunteers in the Kitchen We would still love a few more volunteers in the kitchen – you are welcome to come for a morning session (9.00am – 11.15am) or afternoon session (11.45am – 2.00pm) or both! It is a wonderful, rewarding program to be involved in. Please contact Suzie Wilton on 0419 132 584 or [email protected] Extra Produce Do you or your neighbours have a lemon tree at home with more lemons than you can use? Or way too much silverbeet? We are glad to accept any extra produce that you can’t use at home – be it citrus, fruit or veggies, we will figure out creative ways to use it in the kitchen or for fundraising! Garden Another big thank you to our Environmental Captains, Olivia and Abbey, who are working hard keeping our garden watered with a clever Watering Roster for 5/6 students. Thanks everybody! It is very exciting to be back in the kitchen after a great summer holidays. It will be wonderful to see the Grade 4, 5 & 6’s again and I am looking forward to meeting the Grade 3’s as we start our kitchen classes together! This year, kitchen classes will be on Wednesdays and we will be rotating our groups so a roster will be sent home to keep track of which week we are up to! Don’t forget to bring an apron to your classes to protect your uniform. Also, we are so grateful to our returning volunteers who really hold the whole program together- thank you all so much! Greetings from our Kitchen Specialist
Hi there! My name is Suzie and I am so excited to be a part of the SAKG at Montmorency Primary School! I have had a life long love affair with food - from humble beginnings helping my mum cooking in the kitchen at a young age, to loving Home Economics in high school then studying Food Science further down the track at RMIT. Previously, I have worked as a Food Technologist developing new food products as well as plenty of café kitchen experience (I know how to poach a good egg!) I am currently studying my Certificate III in Commercial Cookery at William Angliss which I am enjoying immensely. As you can see, food is my passion and I am really looking forward to getting to know everyone at the school, cooking and sharing great food together! Thanks!! Suzie, 2013 There are two unique factors about the kitchen garden program. The first is the intrinsic link between the garden, the kitchen and the table. The emphasis is on learning about food and about eating it. No part of the Program can exist without the other. The second is the project is embedded in the curriculum. It is a compulsory part of the school’s program for four years of a child’s life.

Montmorency Primary’s innovative kitchen garden program provides pleasurable food education for young children. Created in conjunction with the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation and Go For Your Life, the program aims to positively influence our students’ food choices. The program allows students to spend a minimum of 40 minutes in the vegetable garden each week. They also spend one and a half hours each week in a kitchen classroom preparing and sharing meals created from their produce. The creation and care of this kitchen garden teaches students about the natural world, about its beauty and how to care for it, how best to use resources and develop an appreciation of the wide range of possibilities for both the cook and the gardener. We also have our very own Pizza Oven that can be used in our SAKG program. See more about it on this page! Program Philosophy
