Extra-Curricular Activities
Stephanie Alexander Kitchen/Garden Program (SAKG)
Unlike most other SAKG programs, at MPS the younger Foundation to Grade 2 students spend time in the garden each week, as well as the Grade 3-6 students. Grades 3-6 also spend one and a half hours each week in a kitchen classroom preparing and sharing meals created from their produce. Classroom teachers attend these classes with their students.

At MPS we believe in developing leadership skills at all grade and academic levels. Gateways ProgramThis is a parent choice elective. At MPS we pride ourselves on working with children at all stages of the academic spectrum. As part of this we offer the this program for highly able students. The G.A.T.E.WAYS (Gifted and Talented Education) Program was established in 1994 to provide opportunities for highly able and gifted children with special educational needs. Like-minded students can participate in programs that will challenge them intellectually and help develop their individual talents. Both short and longer term programs in all areas of the curriculum are offered in Melbourne schools.
G.A.T.E.WAYS is an external provider of educational extension and enrichment activities. Information is sent to the school each term and students are identified with interests in the different programs. G.A.T.E.WAYS provides several programs throughout the year covering a wide range of topics incorporating all areas of the curriculum. Class teachers forward letters for parents to consider if they wish their child to attend. If the child is successful, parents will be notified and once enrolled, G.A.T.E.WAYS deals directly with the parent. A fee is charged for the child to attend and varies depending on the program. If you require more information, please contact Janene Worsam - Grade 5/6 Teacher. |
Stephanie Alexander KG Mini-MarketsThe mini-market is a student-lead activity held several times each term to support the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. Students, families and members of the general public are welcome to visit the mini-market which is held in the grounds of the school on the first Wed of every month between 3 -3.45 pm. Dates feature in our school newsletter and on our website Diary Dates page.
The mini-market sells fresh seasonal garden produce, seedlings, seeds and plants, bread and eggs and freshly baked food items from our kitchen program. The children of our school set up the stall, manage the price lists and sell produce in this popular after school event. Inter-school SportsStudents in Grades 4, 5 and 6 participate in major team sports each Friday and play against other schools (Inter-school sport). This is promoted as a form of friendly, healthy competition where the emphasis is on sportsmanship, fair play, positive attitude and co-operation. Our school is affiliated with School Sport Victoria in our local District. Equal opportunity for both girls and boys is provided. Interschool sport is a highlight for students in Grades 3-6 and played on Friday mornings. Sports that we play at Monty are Volleyball, Basketball, Cricket, Bat Tennis, Netball, Football, Korfball and Softball. MPS has achieved outstanding results in interschool sports.
Soccer LessonsMPS is also fortunate to have a soccer dad who comes to train students at lunch time once/fortnight during some terms over the course of the year.
