MPS Curriculum Overview
Dear Parents and Carers,
Please note: the new AusVels Curriculum has changed the year level terminology starting in 2014.
The first year of mainstream school, previously called 'Prep' by the education department (DEECD), is now called Foundation.
We apologise for any confusion or inconvenience as we re-write documents at our school and on the website to reflect these changes.

The Australian Curriculum and VELS - AusVELSAusVELS is the Foundation to Year 10 curriculum that provides a single, coherent and comprehensive set of prescribed content and common achievement standards, which schools use to plan student learning programs, assess student progress and report to parents.
AusVELS incorporates the Australian Curriculum F-10 for English, Mathematics, History and Science within the curriculum framework first developed for the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). AusVELS uses an eleven level structure to reflect the design of the new Australian Curriculum whilst retaining Victorian priorities and approaches to teaching and learning. MPS prides itself on our previous translation of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). VELS concentrates on the essential learnings that might be expected of children at the various levels. Level l is a Prep Level Level II is a two-year scope and sequence which is relevant to Grade 1 and Grade 2 Level III is a two-year scope and sequence which is relevant to Grade 3 and Grade 4 Level IV is also a two-year scope and sequence which is relevant to Grade 5 and Grade 6 Staff at MPS have been planning the curriculum using VELS since its inception. We were one of the first schools in our network to adopt the department of Education and Early Childhood’s new report format which indicates your child’s performance in relation to the above Levels. With another improvement to our teaching model we are now planning according to the Australian Curriculum. More details to follow as we transition and integrate VELS to/with the Australian Curriculum in the AusVELS framework. The new AusVels levels are as follows: Level 0 Foundation (was Prep) Level 1 Grade 1 Level 2 Grade 2 Level 3 Grade 3 Level 4 Grade 4 Level 5 Grade 5 Level 6 Grade 6 You can find out more information about AusVELS HERE. In addition to the National Testing program ( NAPLAN ), Prep Benchmarking and State Government measures of institutional health, MPS employs its own “in-house” testing and tracking of Literacy and Numeracy. In general, our standards in Literacy and Numeracy are high and these are augmented by an awareness that:
We aim to foster development capabilities and entrepreneurship, teamwork and community service, an awareness of one’s own choices and hence a commitment to personal and community growth. |
